Kevin Maloney
The Mac Sevices Group

In 1995, having built several highly successful businesses in and around the resources industry, Kevin Maloney saw another gap in that market. He realised no one was providing quality, serviced mining accommodation in regional and remote areas. To meet this need, he bought land in Moranbah and established the first MAC Village in 1996.

At the time, outsourced mining accommodation was a new concept. Kevin had his work cut out both convincing major mining clients of the benefits of outsourcing accommodation and selling lenders on the merits of his business model. He also had to persuade local councils to grant development approvals for single persons’ quarters in local townships.

Gradually, the concept gained acceptance. From the outset, Kevin targeted large coal mining companies with high volume, low cost mines. He also sought long-term room contracts to minimise occupancy risk and developed best-in-class service offerings for his guests. The MAC became the first company to introduce ensuite rooms with fridges, TVs, air conditioners and villages with landscaped gardens, bars, sports gyms and facilities, healthy eating programs and retail shops.

To meet the substantial funding requirements for developing these high quality facilities, in April 2007 the family company listed on the ASX.

Today, The MAC is a top 300 Australian company and the leading accommodation services provider in its home market of the Bowen Basin. It has six villages, 5,300 rooms, million dollar revenues and delivered 34% profit growth for the six months to December ’08.

Over the next five years, Kevin aims for The MAC to achieve a fully national footprint and expand its client base to all commodity producers, not just coal miners. He also intends to strengthen The MAC’s connection with major resource companies and find ways to support them in increasing the scope of their accommodation outsourcing.
